Diane and Sarah's journey to Uganda
Our cycle adventure in Uganda
was amazing! We cycled 500km over the course of the week up and down the
many hills of Uganda. We travelled from the source of the Nile in Jinja
to the Murchison Falls National Park. We saw lots of wild animals,
buffalo, elephants, giraffes, baboons, hippopotamus’. Our hotels were
VERY dirty and some didn’t have toilets. We got very dusty but there was
no hot water to shower in. The sun shone all week and we were very
hot. For part of the ride we had to cycle through lots of biting tetse
flies. Their bite is so vicious that they can nip you through your
clothes so even though it was hot and we were cycling up very big hills we had
to wear two layers of clothes. We visited two schools while we were
there – one was a special school. We were very impressed with what we
saw. The young people were making things to sell, preparing their own
food and looking after livestock – large, longhorn cattle! In the other
school we visited class sizes were enormous and often the children sat on a
hard and very dirty floor. They were all very well behaved and some wore
bright and cheerful uniforms. They used sticks to help them to complete
their number work.
